Your best Tottenham XI of all time?

January 8, 2009 By mabbs 66 Comments

In your lifetime, what is your best 11 for Spurs? It doesn’t necessarily have to be the most talented crop, you can even include Paolo Tramezzani if he’s one of your favourites for whatever reason. Here’s mine;

Walker

Mabbutt
King
Woodgate

Hoddle
Waddle
Anderton
Gascoigne
Ginola

Sheringham
Klinnsman

I know what you’re thinking, too attacking. I did consider Steve Sedgley or David Howells anchoring the midfield but this team would be so amazing, they wouldn’t need to defend and with those 3 rocks at the back, other teams would give up just at the sight of them! If only Harry had a pool of talent like this to choose from, we would clean up.

my lifetime is 2002-present, hence the recent choices. picking all players from when they were at their best for spurs

    Robinson GK

    Corluka RB
    King CB
    Woodgate CB
    Edman LB

    Davies RM
    Carrick CM
    Huddlestone CM
    Malbranque LM

    Berbatov FW
    Defoe FW

Corluka hasn’t done much and Edman was far from great, but fullback is our worst position by far and away and they are the best. Simon Davies was a top prospect and really shined when at his best. Malbranque is an absolute workhorse, one of the top players I’ve seen in a Spurs shirt. Carrick is class all the way through and an obvious choice, as is Woodgate and King. Robinson had a shocking final year but the ones before he provided great service.

Gazza is not an essential. It’s about balance. Either Hoddle or Gazza, but not both.

Look at us now without a midfield enforcer.

This is a fantasy team, not one to win the prem. Give the ball to Hoddle, Gazza, Ardiles and Ginola from the kickoff and tell to keep it until halftime!

Not enough representation from the great Double team of 1960-61. They were all good, with 4 great players in Blanchflower, Mackay, White and Jones. Having said that, I would pick Hoddle and Ginola ahead of the latter two, just for the pleasure of watching them. So for me it’s:

    Jennings

    Perryman
    King

I haven’t included current players. Most of these were considered among the best in the world in their respective eras. I put Greaves in as a lone central striker but Chivers or Gilzean could come in for Ginola if necessary.
I have gone for a balanced team so Blanchflower is on the bench as I can’t see him in the same team as Hoddle.
There are so many others that could have been included.

You really think a 3-5-2 is the way to go? You really think that would stop an all-time (or at least an all-lifetime) Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, United or even Newcastle XI?

And for “Anonymous” who wants Gazza in the hole, I think he’s already in one.
